Recent Oils and Fats News July/August

  The Omega-3 seminar at NZIFST conference  This was a well attended session at the recent conference in Palmerston North. Dr. Peter Nichols of CSIRO led the session by reviewing the science of omega-3, an update on producing LCPUFA in land plants and gave a summary of recent analyses on fish oil supplements by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Act Authority). The Oils & Fats Specialist Group Chairman’s Report  May 2015 We currently have 158 members on the mailing list and we are in a reasonable financial state with around $10K in bank deposits. However we have no major fundraiser on the near horizon so it is prudent to call for subscriptions at $25 per head on any new members to cover admin/expenses for the next five years.  We have about 80 handbooks in stock.  Comment from the NZIC Oils and Fats Group Dr. Laurence Eyres, MNZIC, FNZIFST 23/1/15 A group of NZ researchers (not professional analysts) from the University of Auckland recently investigated both % fatty acid composition and oxidation levels of off-the-shelf fish oil supplements.
