Upper limit for omega-3 In July 2012, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published an opinion on the upper level for EPA and DHA long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids The decision came after a 2011 study by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) reported that high consumption of omega-3 fortified foods could exceed the 1.5g recommended daily intake of DHA and EPA. Phosphatidylserine A recent visitor to New Zealand, a scientist from Israel, informed us of developments with phosphatidylserine which is a phospholipid found in soybean, egg and buttermilk. Whilst phosphatidylcholine has been well researched since it is a key component of lecithin, its sister molecule has not. Researchers have now found that phosphatidylserine has significant effects on preventing cognitive decline. AAOCS Adelaide An excellent science and social programme was organized by the Australian branch of AOCS in Adelaide in early November. A group of Kiwis attended who made a significant contribution to the presented papers. A synopsis of the technical papers will be presented in the next newsletter.
